History of Kiwanis Donating for a Great Cause
Founded in 1915 in Detroit, Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. Our members develop youth as leaders, build playgrounds and raise funds for pediatric research. We help shelter the homeless, feed the hungry, mentor the disadvantaged and care for the sick. Working together, members achieve what one person cannot accomplish alone. And along the way, club members share friendship and laughter.
The Kiwanis Club of Huntington Beach was founded in 1961. Our members volunteer their efforts to serve the youth of our own community and to assist needy individuals in our neighborhoods. Currently, with almost 100 members, the Kiwanis Foundation of Huntington Beach actively supports, or is involved with helping, not only the children but also the senior citizens and military of our community.
Members of the Kiwanis Club of Newport Harbor sponsored the new organization for their growing neighbor to the North. Since its inception, the Club has itself sponsored new entities for the Kiwanis family, including clubs in Westminster, and Huntington Beach's Surf City Breakfast Club.
The name Kiwanis is borrowed from the Native American phrase, "Nunc Kee-wanis," meaning, "We trade" or "We trade our talents."
